Salmon River Lighthouse & Marina: Ultimate Fish Camp

Over the years the Barnell and Ellis families fell in love with the local importance and potential of the Salmon River Lighthouse & Marina property. Until 2014 the entire 4.2 acre property was owned by another family who, after a devastating explosion in 1987, renovated and managed the property for several years. They built new cottages, repaired the lighthouse, built a new convenience store, and managed the marina. But over the years the property fell into significant disrepair and desperately needed attention to reach its full potential as a prime destination for fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts.

The Selkirk Lighthouse and the surrounding property was purchased in April 2014 by the Barnell and Ellis families. They began an immediate renovation from top to bottom and updated the lighthouse, cottages, gas dock, and convenience store. They also designed, purchased, and installed several new docks and replaced the defunct boat ramp. Among other things, they added all new hot water heaters, new air conditioning, renovated the bathrooms, installed HD cable TV, replaced mattresses, installed new kitchen appliances, and connected high speed internet. Outside of every cottage and the lighthouse there are new picnic tables and gas grills to round out the ultimate fish camp.

Another important factor that makes the area unique is the deep water harbor. In 1995 the Salmon River harbor was modified with a 1400 ft break wall to protect the river entrance from extreme wind and wave action. As a result the Salmon River estuary took on a whole new level of stability and consistency. Even without dredging, the harbor has consistently maintained its depth.

Today the property consists of 2 cottages with 6 beds, 1 cottage with 4 beds (sleeps 6), and the Selkirk Lighthouse with 4 beds (sleeps 8). Amenities include the outdoor cooking spaces, the boat launch ramp, referrals for guided fishing trips, 10 transient boat slips, a gas dock in the marina, convenience store, small motor boat, kayak, and canoe rentals. The ultimate fish camp might actually be the ultimate adventure camp!

The fishing in Lake Ontario and in the Salmon River is fantastic from April – November.

Fall fishing is hot right now! For the second year in a row the salmon fishing in Lake Ontario has extended into October. The Fall weather is glorious and anglers enjoy calm and moderate winds. There is a buzz every Fall in Pulaski, NY as a huge mass of Salmon return to the Salmon River, and throngs of fishermen arrive with them. Their migration takes the salmon right past the front door of the Selkirk Lighthouse into the Salmon River. In addition to wading on the river, many anglers are night fishing from boats in the mouth of the Salmon River just outside the marina.

The Salmon River Lighthouse & Marina is open and ready for business starting in April for the tremendous brown trout fishing. The lake trout fishing begins to pick up shortly after and there is a mixed bag of brown trout and lake trout from May until June. July typically marks the start to the salmon bite and the lake trout fishing continues to be good as well. In August and September the focus shifts almost exclusively to king and coho salmon. The Salmon River Lighthouse and Marina stays open through the Fall salmon season and closes for the winter at the end of November.
