What Is Gun Oil Good For?

What is it exactly that you expect gun oil to do? So, what are the best oil products to use on your firearms? What are gun oils really geared to do? Oil in particular is of course a petroleum based product with the universal purpose of protecting metal from rust corrosion, but also just to make metals run and move more freely. In terms of firearms function, think of it as motor oil in an engine. Now there are specialty oils with many types of additives as well as synthetic gun lubricants. Some so-called “gun oils” now also claim to be useful for gun cleaning. This is Ballistol and was presumably developed in Germany. Sure, I might run a swab of gun oil down the rifle bore after a day afield hunting and then wipe down the exterior with an oiled gun cloth. After cleaning, I follow up with gun oil, again as a rust prohibitor, protectant and lubricant.

Also it is not unusual at all to find gun owners using all kinds of lubricant products as wrongful substitutes for true gun oil. So, what are the best oil products to use on your firearms?
