Essential Airline Carry-Ons for Outdoorsmen

One thing that hunters and fishermen have in common is their passion for the outdoors. When you hop in your car or truck you can bring all your favorite outdoor gear to your camp ground or trial head. But if you are anything like us, your enthusiasm for outdoors adventure might seem at odds with the TSA, airline agents, terminals, jetbridges, and airpot travel in general. But if your next adventure involves a flight, here are some items to make sure to include in your carry-on luggage.

Best-Bug-Spray-Repellent examples that can be carried on during airline travel

1. Bug Spray – Bug bites are the worst, the constant itching is its own form of torture. Don’t be caught without bug spray and maybe some cortisone cream! Both items can be carried on as long as they comply with TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. (Liquids, creams, and gels may be carried-on as long as they are in individual containers that are 3.4 oz or less. Those containers must be in a single zip lock bag no larger than a quart.)

heap of safety match, matches are allowed as a carry on

2. Matches – Bringing one container of matches is A-OK but forget the strike anywhere matches (they are prohibited in carry-on AND checked baggage). A single lighter is also permitted in your carry-on as long as it is disposable not considered a torch.

Many Tools, if they are under 7" they can be brought on an airplane

3. Tools – The magic number with tools is 7 inches. You can bring screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and even multi tools in your carry-on as long as there is no blade. Scissors are even allowed, provided the scissor blade is shorter than 4″.

A healthy organic trail mix of almonds, raisins, cranberries, and other various nutrition.

4. Food – Bring some snacks for the plane and also your favorite snacks for the outdoors. You can carry-on fruit, jerky, trail mix, bars, and just about anything edible that is solid. Liquid food items are fine as well but must meet the 3-1-1 3.4oz requirement. Interestingly, you can carry-on a camp stove as long as it is empty, but fuel of any kind is a big no-no in both checked bags and carry-ons.

Paracord security bracelets that can be carried on during air travel

5. Fasteners – Rope, duct tape, and zip ties have an unlimited number of uses from simple repair to safety and rescue. Luckily everything from climbing ropes to a little paracord is allowed in your carry-on luggage. Be prepared for anything and pack some rope, duct tape, and zip ties in your carry-on.

Red Plastic First Aid Kit Box

6. First Aid Kits – A simple kit with over the counter medications and wound treatment items is easy to bring with you on an airplane. I don’t think we need to say anything else about the importance if first aid kits. Don’t be without one.

head lamp

7. Flashlight – When you are on your outdoor adventure you may find yourself in the dark, we often take light for granted until its not the flick of a switch away. Bring handheld flashlight or headlamp to light your way. Note that a flashlight is considered a tool and must be under 7″.
